Surviving the Firewall

Everything you need to know about eSIMs, SIM cards, and staying online in China.

互联网格局 / The Landscape

The Problem

China blocks Google, Meta (Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp), and most Western services. Your choice of connection determines whether you get unrestricted access or need a separate VPN.

Local SIM

Restricted internet. Fast local speeds. Requires a VPN app for Google/IG.

Roaming eSIM

Unrestricted. Routes via Hong Kong/Singapore (DRACIX routes via London). No VPN needed.

方案选择 / Choose Your Plan

Pick Your Option

International Roaming eSIM

Best for Most
  • Bypasses Firewall (No VPN needed)
  • Instant setup via QR code
  • No local Chinese phone number

Providers: Airalo, Nomad, Holafly

Local Physical SIM

Long Term / Business
  • Get a +86 Number (Vital for some apps)
  • Very cheap data rates locally
  • Requires passport registration at store
  • Needs VPN for Western apps

Providers: China Mobile, China Unicom

Carrier Roaming

Convenience / Pricey
  • Keep your home number active
  • Usually bypasses Firewall
  • Expensive ($10/day caps often)

Providers: Verizon, AT&T, Vodafone

费用分析 / Cost Analysis

What It Costs

Data is cheap in China, but convenience costs more. Local SIMs are the cheapest per GB but require in-person setup. eSIMs balance cost and instant activation.

Pro Tip

Avoid "Pay-As-You-Go" roaming from your home carrier unless you have a specific travel pass. It can cost upwards of $2,000/GB without a plan.

Price Comparison: 10GB Data Package (15 Days)

*Prices are approximate averages as of late 2024. "Home Carrier" assumes a $10/day pass.

数据预算 / Data Budget

How Much Data Do You Need?

The "Super App" Economy

In China, WeChat (Weixin) and Alipay are operating systems for life. You will use them for payments, ordering food, booking taxis, and messaging. While they don't consume huge data for payments, the integrated "Mini Programs" (videos, maps, shopping) add up.

WeChat Video Call ~300MB / hour
Maps (Apple/Baidu) ~50MB / hour
Alipay Payments < 5MB / day
Douyin (TikTok) ~800MB / hour

Your Connection Checklist

01
Crucial Step

1 Week Before

Download WeChat & Alipay. Link your foreign credit card (Visa/Mastercard) to Alipay. Complete the "Real Name Verification" by uploading your passport photo in the app.

02
Purchase

3 Days Before

Buy your eSIM. Scan the QR code to "install" it, but do not activate roaming yet. If getting a local SIM, ensure your phone is unlocked.

03
Connect

On Arrival

Landing in PVG/PEK: Switch eSIM line to "On". Turn on "Data Roaming" for that line. It should connect to China Mobile or China Unicom instantly.
